Foundational Skills: Play And Creativity. Despite how hard Forbes trumpets Creative Thinking as one of the top 3 skills for the modern workplace, you don’t see people bragging about it on their CV’s.
Too far out the box, it would seem. And yet, without play and creativity, it’s impossible to adjust, adapt, grow and change.
You need play because you need to be able to step into a safe space to experiment, ask ‘what if …’ and just jam with the elements of your challenge. You need creativity because, well, once you’ve gone jamming, you’re going to have ideas that need to be made into reality.
But by insisting on measuring performance on hours instead of outputs, many businesses slam the door shut on activities like play and creative thinking because the hour-to-output ratio is murky. In a disturbing symptom of our global short-term returns addiction, creativity is all too often shunned in favour of doing what already works.
The arrogance and myopia of this response has been illustrated time and time again: in the music business, in the publishing industry, in the media. And yet, many companies seem to feel they are immune from the impact of technology and its rampant, exponential increase.
Failing to understand the intellectual power of play and creativity, most executives consign them to their ‘nice to have’ list, failing to understand that, to weather the ever-growing storm of change, they are ‘must haves’ … in fact the ‘must haves’ that will give you a fighting chance of catching those heavy winds instead of being dashed on the rocks.
Tom Peters once said, ‘It’s not the competition you KNOW about that kills you,’ and there is no better statement to explain how important play and creativity are. Simply put, they turn YOUR business into the competition that no-one saw coming, instead of remaining part of the masses that suddenly have to adapt or die.
Luckily, finding out more about how play and creativity works is as simple as attending a free online summit called The Playful Creative Summit 2021. Here, 50 plus international experts share how and why they do what they do, revealing tips and tools to help ANYONE get to grips with these fundamentals of our modern age.
As a society, we have spent nearly 200 years trying to get humans to behave in a machine-like, robotic way. Now that we have perfected machines that can do all of that kind of work perfectly, it’s time we found work for ourselves, that plays to our strengths… our playful creative cores.
The Summit is free to attend. All you have to do is register for the website:
The Playful Creative Summit is a FREE 5-day long virtual conference for those who need new solutions to existing problems, or have creative ideas but no idea of what to do with them
