Omega 2019. The end of 2019.
I’m feeling very reflective today. It’s been quite a year, not just on a personal note but in terms of our ever changing world.
We’ve seen such diversity in world news (from On This Day):
- We saw the announcement of a corruption investigation into President Donald Trump in March.
- A second individual was ‘cured’ of HIV after stem cell transplant treatment.
- Greta Thunberg inspired climate change strikes by school children all over the world.
- Syrian Democratic Forces announced that the last Islamic State territory has been retaken.
- New York City officially named a street Sesame Street in honour of the show’s 50th anniversary
- In May we found out that for the first time all major US pageants were won by black women.
- We discovered that the average person ingests 50,000 pieces of micro-plastic a year and breathes in a similar amount.
- We saw over 1 million people protest in Hong Kong over proposed new extradition laws to China.
- Scientific journals told us that global warming is the fastest in 2,000 years and scientific consensus that humans are the cause is at 99%.
- Simone Biles became the most decorated gymnast in history.
- The Sumatran rhino is officially declared extinct in Malaysia after last known specimen dies.
- The British General Election was won by Boris Johnson in a landslide win with a 80 seat majority. The Scottish National Party also wins 48 of 59 seats in Scotland.
There has been much to cry about and despair over, but also things that inspire us and bring hope for the future.
Omega 2019. One thing is for certain, this year, this decade, ends, poised for change.
It does feel that we’ve been watching a film as the year has been unfolding. I leave it up to you to decide what genre!
Whilst many countries have made moves to ensure conformity at the deepest levels, Maverick Leaders have actively moved the other way. Ruthless conformity leads to poor outcomes. There is an increased need for diversity, not just diversity in terms of people but diversity of thinking.
Although world leaders have encouraged the world population to be insular, to act on their own best interests; we must continue to work for the greater good. To do more than what’s in our own best interests, so that we can develop and empower a society equipped for change and success.
Omega 2019, you were interesting. But it’s time for a change. Alpha 2020. The need to develop Maverick Leaders is stronger today, than it has ever been.
