The need for leadership mentors. It is very common for leaders to have executive coaches to enhance their performance, and they do an excellent job. There is however an urgent need to recognise the power mentors can bring to leaders, especially if that mentor is external to the organisation. Today’s guest reminds the audience that the role of the mentor can be fulfilled by different mentors at different times of their career.
Darrell Williams discusses with Judith her belief that senior leaders need to create an environment where their team can correct them without fear. They also share valuable information and examples on mentoring relationships and mentee successes as well as the difference between mentoring and coaching. Mentoring is primarily a direct transfer of knowledge and great mentors ensure that their mentee benefits from an appropriate level of coaching within the mentoring relation – carefully ensuring that the relationship does not slip into a trainer – trainee one.
Darrell Williams is a Master Certified Life Coach, he is a member of the White House Communications Agency Hall of Fame. He is also the Chief, for Military Human Resources for Operations at the Defense Information Systems Agency. He serves as the Human Resources senior advisor on all military matters. Darrell is also part of the DoD Federal Coaching Network and a certified workshop facilitator.
